Marc Jacobs right on Target!

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Target has been extremely successful with their Go International collaborations bringing the masses branded designer items at popular prices. Judging by the crowds at H&M for the launches of their own collaborative collections, it’s an idea that isn’t going anywhere soon…with plenty of designers only too happy to turn their names into household ones.
Turning that idea on it’s ear a bit, as he is apt to do, Marc Jacobs has created a similar type of collection called Special Items. Rather than mass marketing it, as Target would, it is available at only a limited number of his own stores (or on eBay, where unscrupulous sellers claim they are sold out everywhere and often don’t mention the details of what kind of Marc Jacobs bag it is…caveat emptor!).
If you are fortunate to live near one of the Marc stores which carries the Special Items line (or have a friend who does) you can still get a hold of several styles…and they are very hot commodities.

One of my personal favorites, my parents actually had the original (Pan Am, not MJ) one which they used exclusively for travel is the flight bag. It works because this is a bag you would expect to be in PVC vinyl. Defunct airline on the front, Marc Jacobs signature on the back…great for overnight, or the gym. In white/blue, or reversed blue/white. Only $48.

The quilted totes, in 2 sizes are still on the store shelves now. At $48 for the small, $58 for the large the price can’t be beat, and the assortment of 4 shiny metallics or basic black can’t be beat. These styles look a bit plastic-y, but it works well with the metallics and patent black…none look even remotely like pretend leather (on the flip side, none really looks like more than a cheap bag either). I′ve seen this bag on the street, and at the beach already and it’s a cute knock around tote.

For my money, the best of the bunch are the fabric totes which range in price from $10-$16, and come in a huge variety of prints and colors. While at any higher price I′d question the quality, or at least expect it to be better, for what they are these are adorable. Just beware, the print wears off and fades rather easily…though you could just call it worn in.
Other items in the line, include small accessories like wallets and key chains, rain boots, tees, and caps. If you’re near a Marc by Marc Jacobs store, definitely worth a check.

Does it come with smelling salts?

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I get kind of silly and swoony when new bags start popping up going into Fall (not sure why, but for some reason it’s not the same for Spring things, there’s just something about the colors, and lushness of Fall merchandise)
So far the number one contender for my love is the Valentino Histoire Bag, particularly in the patent leather, and only in bright lollipop red.

I think this bag could brighten up even the gloomiest of days.
The 2 pockets at the bottom keep it from looking too much like the Givenchy Clarabelle (maybe it’s the handle buckles) which doesn′t come in anything nearly as racy as this. The braided handles and tabs keep it from being too shiny, and add a slightly whimsical touch.
Sadly, love does not come cheap…the Histoire is $1795 at Saks. Gladly, it’s still on pre-order, giving me time to save my pennies, or move on to another love.
Sigh, I’m such a fickle Bag Chick.

Comment on Madonna Style by Porche

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

You don’t get to be a superstar like Madonna by not taking chances, and that includes fashion. I think she always looks beautiful these days. I know a great site that carries new styles that are cutting edge, just like Madonna’s style. They carry really great stuff (I should know-I nearly buy them out). So take a change and check it out!

Sale trifecta

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

The big sales are still just over a month away, but Memorial day always brings some worthy markdowns. Here are 3 bags I think are a great deal, and will take you through the Summer and on into the Fall in style.

One of the hottest totes of the season, is unquestionably YSL’s Downtown tote. The leather and calf hair versions are well over $1200, but for almost half that you can have a canvas and leather version in a dark sage which will pop against lighter colors of Summer, but still be a fantastic color for the Fall. A darker color also means that stains will be less apparent when you find yourself toting it every day. Regularly &1,095, now $657 at Saks.

While it’s been very trendy lately, quilting is really pretty classic, as is this quilted Marc Jacobs North South tote. It doesn’t have the ruffling or gathering on the Ryder, but that’s what makes it timeless. There is just enough hardware to give it a great look without going overboard. Bags like this in uber-versatile black don’t turn up on sale all that often. This is the bag people will stop to ask you about years from now! Regularly $1175, now $824 at ELuxury.

Lastly, and on the more trendy side, but the price was so great I had to include it, is the Kooba Carla in a metallic bronze. Not exactly timeless, nor does it have the longevity of the Sienna, but at a price that makes it worth while, this is such a cute bag, in a fantastic finish (other colors are available, but this is the most unique). Regularly $650, now $390 at Bergdorf Goodman . (By the way, this is the bag I would keep in mind, but wait for more markdowns…you may be able to get it for even less in a few weeks.)
Happy bargain shopping!

The dress was gorgeous and I’m sure she still looked like a fashion icon in it.

I wonder if the drink of choice will be Bacardi while the ‘cut and sew’ will be going on. If thats the case this could be pure entertainment.

before the Tribute…

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Years before the Louis Vuitton Tribute, a $42,000 “can’t get one even if you could afford it” handbag debuted, the art (if you can call it an art) of putting those leftover scraps of handbag to good use was pioneered by Coach.

From that first patchwork tote created as a Holiday offering, a whole collection has been spawned…whether it’s a good thing or not…well, you can decide that for yourself (I reserve my opinions for a few lines down).

Pictured above is one of the latest of the bunch, the Ergo Patchwork Hobo from the Summer Patchwork collection. The little washed denim pocket is a newer touch, but having never been a fan of the logo fabrics, I’m not sure I’d want to carry several of them on my arm…at once.

Where the Louis Vuitton Tribute was, in my opinion, less than attractive, there was something compelling about it…I wanted to see if I could figure out where all the bag styles were. The Coach patchwork bags have gone from a clever idea, to “kute”, to just tired and pedestrian (as has Coach in general…where only a few years ago there were sparks of fashion promise at a decent price, the bags are kind of meh and uninspiring…but I digress).

The collection runs from $98 to $458, making it far more accessible than the Tribute (how many times does $458 go into $42,000?) and extends from bags to hats, sneakers, even scarves with the patchwork printed on them.

Summer’s collection has 2 color ways…denim or khaki, and you can see and buy them from Coach.

Goliath’s handbag

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Well, actually, it’s Natasha Mitra’s Vuitton Stratus bag as featured in New York Magazine.

It’s just gargantuan…the whole proportion which is tough to make out in the sort of photo I usually use, is huuuuge. It looks like Mitra and a friend could fit inside…and still have room to move.

Rah Rah Rabeanco!

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Ever so often, while out shopping, er…I mean doing research, yeah, research, I’ll come across a fresh looking bag which totally piques my interest so I’ll jot down the name in my book, and see what else I can turn up. That’s how I found this fantastic Madison Shopper from Hong Kong based Rabeanco.

This lipstick red leather tote is chock full of details, pouches and compartments all done on a tasteful scale. I still like my hardware, but I′m just not into it obstructing the whole bag.
There is vertical a front zipper pocket, a tiny removable change purse, and inside a larger makeup bag, as well as 1 zippered and 2 pouch pockets. The 2 top handles have a whip stitch detail, which matches the jean like rivets at the handle’s base.
All in all, this is a great looking tote, at a super price, and judging by the dearth of online stores carrying the company at all one you won’t see very often (Though Intuition has a few styles, which means they may have hit the trend radar).
You can get the Madison online for $279 (I said it was a great price!) from Skippy Style.
