Marc Jacobs right on Target!
Thursday, May 31st, 2007Target has been extremely successful with their Go International collaborations bringing the masses branded designer items at popular prices. Judging by the crowds at H&M for the launches of their own collaborative collections, it’s an idea that isn’t going anywhere soon…with plenty of designers only too happy to turn their names into household ones.
Turning that idea on it’s ear a bit, as he is apt to do, Marc Jacobs has created a similar type of collection called Special Items. Rather than mass marketing it, as Target would, it is available at only a limited number of his own stores (or on eBay, where unscrupulous sellers claim they are sold out everywhere and often don’t mention the details of what kind of Marc Jacobs bag it is…caveat emptor!).
If you are fortunate to live near one of the Marc stores which carries the Special Items line (or have a friend who does) you can still get a hold of several styles…and they are very hot commodities.

One of my personal favorites, my parents actually had the original (Pan Am, not MJ) one which they used exclusively for travel is the flight bag. It works because this is a bag you would expect to be in PVC vinyl. Defunct airline on the front, Marc Jacobs signature on the back…great for overnight, or the gym. In white/blue, or reversed blue/white. Only $48.

The quilted totes, in 2 sizes are still on the store shelves now. At $48 for the small, $58 for the large the price can’t be beat, and the assortment of 4 shiny metallics or basic black can’t be beat. These styles look a bit plastic-y, but it works well with the metallics and patent black…none look even remotely like pretend leather (on the flip side, none really looks like more than a cheap bag either). I′ve seen this bag on the street, and at the beach already and it’s a cute knock around tote.

For my money, the best of the bunch are the fabric totes which range in price from $10-$16, and come in a huge variety of prints and colors. While at any higher price I′d question the quality, or at least expect it to be better, for what they are these are adorable. Just beware, the print wears off and fades rather easily…though you could just call it worn in.
Other items in the line, include small accessories like wallets and key chains, rain boots, tees, and caps. If you’re near a Marc by Marc Jacobs store, definitely worth a check.
