Miu Miu Oversized Sequin Clutch

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

You know what I really appreciate? The return of the oversized clutch. I’ve got lots of keys, a keyless-entry fob for my car and a Blackberry with a case on it, all of which have to leave the house with me no matter what. I’ve encountered a fair number of miniscule handbags that wouldn’t have fit one of those items by itself, let alone all of them together – don’t even think about adding in a lipgloss or card case.

The designers at Miu Miu know my struggle, obviously, which is why they’ve been so kind as to create the Miu Miu Oversized Sequin Clutch. Finally, I can carry a sparkly little bag that’s not actually too little to be useful.

Miu Miu did a good job of keeping the colors of this clutch neutral so that it won’t overwhelm an outfit – when a bag is this big and this shiny, also choosing a statement color would perhaps be too much for a lot of potential customers. The subtle gold, silver and green variation could go nicely with a lot of different outfits without upstaging the other elements of an ensemble. In addition to all of that, if you need your hands free for something, it has an optional strap. Sign me up, please. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $995.

Trendspotted: A Stitch in Time – The Quilted Pattern Trend

Friday, November 6th, 2009

The Find As an ode to the iconic 2.55 Chanel handbag there are a number of handbags incorporating this the quilting trend. Quilted handbags feature various patterns primarily stitched onto leather. Many of the Marc Jacobs handbags incorporate quilting into the styling of the bag as well.

Quilting can also be seen on accessories like this Stella McCartney Wide Quilted Waist Belt (upper left on model, $525 at Net-a-Porter) and of course winter puffer jackets. Embroidered patterns are laid out in vertical and horizontal patterns overlap to create diamond or other patterns that add dimension and texture.

We’ve spotted some of our favorite styles that incorporate the quilting trend. Juicy Couture’s Serena Quilted Duffel Tote (upper right, $198.00 at ShopBop.com) is constructed of nylon and has plenty of room to store your essentials inside 3 zip front pockets and two interior patch pockets. The double rolled handles ruffled banding and Juicy Couture logo charm give this bag a youthful appeal.

Already on its way to becoming a classic, the Marc Jacobs Women’s Quilted Bruna Satchel (middle right, $1,295.00 at Bloomingdales.com) is shown in black leather and features double handles and gold tone accent hardware. This quilted handbag is tied up with a front belt accent, Marc Jacobs logo, zips closed and is embellished with a faux gold tone turnlock.

Balmain’s runway looks continue their influential appeal with this Mat quilted leather bag (bottom right, $1,915 at Net-a-Porter), which is quilted in Italy and assembled by hand in France. Tory Burch’s wearable modern classics are inspired by the designer’s globetrotter adventures. The Tory Burch Quilted Nico Tote, (bottom left, $295.00 at ToryBurch.com) is made of coated quilted poplin. Options for handles include both cross body and dual leather handles. Inside you’ll find two pockets and one side zip pocket just the right size for stashing your keys, phone and other essentials.

Magnes-icent

It can be so hard to find a clean and classic handbag these days…add on criteria like super fashionable, and uncommon, and you’ll really be hard pressed.
3 sisters from New York are determined to change all that. The Magnes Sisters have crafted a line of handbags that are chic, understated, and elegant, but by no means wall flowers.

Mr Big, is a super slim, folded clutch style. I love the unisex feel it has, almost like a vintage 70s YSL smoking jacket…the short chain is evocative of a pocket watch fob. But, unfold it, and it’s a cool short tote with an attached key chain and details, like a front pocket that were previously hidden. This would be the perfect accessory to punch up all the slouchy newsboy styles that are already appearing in stores for Fall!
It comes in 7 great colors, but my favorite is the indigo. It’s a reasonable $297 from Magnes Sisters.

Another style that is Grace Kelly cool (and cooly named) is the Dry Martini.

A perfect day to evening clutch, this is the sort of bag you find yourself pulling from the closet time and again…it is that perfect. From the peekaboo handle on the flap, to the flat pleating and stitching it will look sharp and elegant with almost anything from jeans to a suit. A short chain strap can be tucked away, left to dangle, or used to free up your hands. It comes in a variety of neutral and metallic leathers, and can be purchased for $224 also from Magnes Sisters directly.
