Is this Marc Jacobs Crossbody a Mini Parachute?

Monday, August 9th, 2010

It could be. And while it’s a cute bag, I have a tiny problem with it. The Marc Jacobs Parachute Cammie Crossbody Bag looks, to me, like it was made out of greenish golden tin foil. Someone just bunched that stuff up and stuck it under the zipper.

But there’s a general problem with this. First of all, it’s called the Parachute, so the designer must know that it looks like it was made out of flimsy parachute material (which pretty much looks like tin foil to my inexperienced eye – when it comes to adventurous air travel). The other problem is that I’m disappointed with the stock photo.

Because the bag is plopped on the set counter, we can’t see what it looks like when it’s full and being worn on the body. My guess it that once items are put inside and you carry it, it’ll look much, much better – not bunchy at all. If anyone has seen the bag in person, please enlighten me. For now, I’m giving Marc Jacobs the benefit of the doubt. Buy through Bloomingdale’s for $495.

Marc Jacobs knowns how to pair Fun with Feminine

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

I have a bit of a Marc Jacobs obsession right now. I love his ladylike bags for fall, especially with the added structured body, two toned coloring, and chain link shoulder strap. While the Gene Satchel is a bit more subdued, the Marc Jacobs Single Sequined Bag adds a burst of fun in neutral colors.

I already expect dissenting opinions, but let me explain to you all why I like this bag.

Remember the Marc Jacobs Tweed Bag with Florescent baubles? I bought that and I adore it. It has the right bit of over-the-top in each detail that it just works. But I will be the first to admit that it is rather eye-catching and a bit too much for many occasions, which is why I am honing in on this sequined bag.

There is undoubtedly sensory overload going on with the bag; we have multicolored sequin embellishment paired with a textured leather flap over front and chain and leather strap. But the entire bag is neutral in color, which tones down everything going on and gives a fun yet feminine touch. I just adore this bag. And this bag reminds me that fall is around the corner (along with our big move to NYC) and that puts and ear-to-ear smile on my face. Buy via Net A Porter for $995.

A Great Black Bag: Marc Jacobs Amber Corner Zip Tote

Monday, June 28th, 2010

We are big Marc Jacobs fan-girls here at PurseBlog. But it has been a little while since I ran into a Marc Jacobs bag that I truly found myself wanting. Don’t get me wrong, there are many beautiful designs, but I like to see a bag that I don’t just want but can justify ‘needing’. This bag comes the closest to ‘needing’ that I have felt in a while from Marc.

A black tote is a staple piece for a handbag wardrobe and the Marc Jacobs Amber Corner Zip Tote should be considered as a potential option.

This bag was spotted in green on Cameron Diaz which helped put it on my radar. As far as black totes go, this bag has additions that help the bag stand out without going over-the-top. I am sure the leather itself is thick and smooshy, as Marc Jacobs leather tends to be. There is goldtone hardware and double top handles with rings.

What helps the bag stand out are the goldtone padlock on the front center of the bag along with side zippers. I really am finding myself drawn to this bag. Sure, it is nothing out of the ordinary, but for a simple black tote, it does have aspects that stand out. On the inside there is a zip and open pocket. Overall measurements are 13″H x 14″W x 6″D. Buy through Bergdorf Goodman for $995.

Marc Jacobs Rubik Quilted Debbie Mini Bag

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

We are never huge fans of nylon bags at PurseBlog. In certain situations I can completely understand why it is the best option, but typically, it is not a material I would choose. Yet sometimes a designer finds a way to combine nylon with other materials and make it appealing. That is what the Marc Jacobs Rubik Quilted Debbie Mini Bag brings us, a combination of materials on a cute design.

We are Marc Jacobs fan girls (ok, mostly Amanda is) and many of his designs are both playful and beautiful. The mini bag style is very on trend right now. But the mini bag is not for everyone. The silhouette on Saks wearing this bag is 5′5″, which can give you an idea how it would look on you. With my being so tall, I tend to stray away from mini bags. But that is all personal preference.

Let’s get to the rest of the details of this bag. It is available in both black and purple. Purple is one of my favorite colors on handbags. It works well with blacks, blues, tans, and neutrals. The bag itself is very reminiscent of Marc Jacobs, with quilted nylon offset by pebble-textured leather. The crossbody strap has a 12.5″ drop and there is a top zip closure under a magnetic snap flap top. The measurements are 6¼”W X 6″H X 2½”D. This bag is little and lovely. Buy via Saks for $495.

Look for Less: Twisted Knot Detail

Friday, April 9th, 2010

When I first spotted the Burberry Knotted Hobo, it was love (cue song from Lady and the Tramp when they share spaghetti and meatballs now). While the Burberry Hobo is not ridiculously expensive, I still found a great option for the look for less.

Let me introduce the Marc by Marc Jacobs Bow Wow Wow Slingdoodle Leather Crossbody Bag. Ok, let’s please all ignore the name of the bag. It is funny, but rather ridiculous. As if the Bow Wow Wow was not enough Marc Jacobs added the Slingdoodle. Anyhow, back to the matter at hand.

I adore a good hobo, and find myself wearing hobos often. An additional touch which adds such a soft feminine dimension, like the twisted knot detail, lures me in. And why wouldn’t it? It is super stylish and feminine. The good thing about these two bags is they are similar yet different. The Burberry option appears more dressy with the soft lambskin and unified design. The Marc by Marc Jacobs version on the other hand combines both leather and perforated leather with tassel detail. Both bags offer similar looks, both bags feature the twisted knot detail, but both bags are different.

Buy the Burberry bag via Bloomingdale’s for $1,095 and buy the Marc by Marc Jacobs bag via Bloomingdale’s for $458.

Which do you prefer: The more dressy Burberry bag or the younger, perforated Marc by Marc Jacobs option?

Marc Jacobs Kate Lock Hobo

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Marc Jacobs is doing something quirky and cool with his spring bag collection and we are loving it! Last night I posted on our Twitter and Facebook asking people what handbag they have passed up recently and regret it. While I could think of a few, I had this nagging image in the back of my mind, of a totally off-the-wall Marc Jacobs bag that somehow is speaking to me.

Do you remember the Marc Jacobs Fluorescent Tweed Bag? It is completely tacky, over-done, and lovely. Yes, I said lovely. Why am I feeling so drawn to this crazy mish-mash of tweed, patent leather, and colorful baubbles? I don’t know. But I adore that bag.

So when I attempt to ground myself and realize that it is possible that buying a super trendy bag is not the way to go, I have to find a replacement. And I found one. I found nearly the same price in a black leather bag from Marc Jacobs. The Marc Jacobs Kate Lock Hobo has a little bit of sass with the zipper and stud detail on the sides. Like the Tweed Bag, and many bags from his spring collection, there is a signature lock detail at the front of the bag. Otherwise this is a simple hobo, with a long adjustable leather strap and slouchy body.

I dig where Marc Jacobs took his spring line. It ventures from downright crazy to slightly colorful to over-detailed to just right. There has to be a bag in there somewhere for you. Buy the Kate Lock Hobo via Bergdorf Goodman for $950.

And if you are me, for some odd absurd reason, the only bag still calling my name is the Fluorescent Tweed Bag. Tomatoes in my face? If you are like me, buy the Fluorescent Tweed Bag at Net a Porter for $995.

Marc Jacobs Robert Jennifer Shoulder Bag

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Marc Jacobs Robert Jennifer Shoulder BagI’ve been sitting on this bag for a while now, which is odd for me. Usually, when I decide that I want and/or need to write about something, I do it immediately. The screen shot of the bag sits on my desktop for a day, at most. Generally, I feel like my first impression is the one I should go with and that it’s the one that most of you guys will identify with (if not always agree). But when it comes to the Marc Jacobs Robert Jennifer Shoulder Bag, I just can’t decide which way is up. I’m sure I HAD a first impression of it, but I don’t remember what it was, and even if I did, I’m not sure it’d be particularly relevant. This bag is making me wishy-washy in the extreme; it shows great attention to detail, but I’m not sure the overall effect is something that I can get on board with. I do, however, like the shape and size - perfect for that flap bag trend I keep mentioning - and I think it’s a great example of how a chain strap doesn’t have to be a Chanel ripoff. And I like the IDEA of the multicolored woven leather, but it just seems a little too busy and the colors a little too autumnal for a spring bag. With all the colors, the tassels, the woven chain…it’s a little too much all at once. I give it a passing grade overall, but just barely. Buy through eLuxury for $1995.

Marc Jacobs Jeweled Stam Satchel

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Marc Jacobs Jeweled Stam Satchel As many of you who read my Fashion Week posts know, I’m a major Marc Jacobs apologist. In my eyes, he can do almost no wrong and his main personal export is fabulousness. So it’s only natural that my huge personal bias towards His Excellency may be clouding my vision when I look at the Marc Jacobs Jeweled Stam Satchel. Because I was doubtful of it at first, but I seem to have somehow convinced myself that it is really fantastic, in a bling-tastic, bedazzled, Liberace sort of way. The bag’s quilts are covered in zillions of light blue Swarovski crystals against a backdrop of dark blue suede (may this be the first suede Stam?) with the traditional gold chain for even more shine. I think we all know that MJ is only continuing to make new versions of the Stam to capitalize on its former status as an It-Bag, but my 2005 black leather version is still one of my favorite bags, so I can’t hate on those that continue to snap them up. This particular wild-n-sparkly version would have to be for a very specific, very bold customer however, given its assumed ability to completely overpower anything else you’re wearing. I give Beyonce two weeks before we see paparazzi photos of her carrying it. Do your thing, girl. Buy through eLuxury for $2350.

Fashion Week 2009 - Marc Jacobs Handbags

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Marc Jacobs Handbags 2009 Fashion Week can be a hard for us handbag lovers. Because of the placement of photographers at the end of the runway, it’s often difficult to get a halfway decent look at the bags we might be seeing in stores at the end of the summer. Thankfully, though, we’ve rounded up some bag pictures from the Marc Jacobs show after the jump.

So what do we have here? We have a few things that mirrored Jacobs’ show - neon, patterns, a slightly punk, slightly glam 80s feel. And we also have a few things that mirror MJ bags from previous seasons - quilting and chains. The chains are the primary straps in most of these flap shoulder bags, which is a bit of a departure from the Stam’s chain accent. Although the pictures aren’t super helpful, many of these bags also appear to be small-to-medium-sized shoulder bags, sometimes that Jacobs hasn’t focused on in recent collections. Many also include exotic skins, studs, and other embellishment that make these some of the most elaborate bags I’ve seen from his normally-rather-subdued signature collection. See for yourself below.
