Who’s that girl carrying an ostrich Hermes Birkin walking to the set of her hit TV drama in NYC?

If you guessed Kelly Rutherford, you are correct! This bag is a Lily Van Der Woodsen favorite, as Kelly has been seen carrying this bag before.

In fact, Kelly Rutherford is known to use her personal Hermes collection as part of her Gossip Girl wardrobe. We all know Kelly is a huge Hermes fan, in fact her first son is named Hermes (though she states her love of the brand is not directly correlated to his being name). The gold ostrich Hermes Birkin is and always will be a classic. With Gossip Girl filming in full force, my excitement for the return of the show is building.

I have decided that Lady Gaga performs makeovers on her Hermes Birkins just for us. She wants the handbag lovers of the world to get a rise out of what she is doing to her bag. And how can you not? Her last Hermes Birkin was taken over by what looked like a Sharpie marker with a message to her Japanese fans.

This Birkin has been taken over with studs, and not just any studs, seemingly sharp studs. The kind of studs that can poke you and get an “Ouch” reaction from your mouth. And when you inspect the bag closely, they are not perfectly set apart, rather tried to be somewhat in pattern but it is a bit of a free-form design.

What I wonder is if Lady Gaga sits in her spacious first class seat as she flies from location to location with a glue gun and a bag of studs working on her handbag-art-project. You know, with anyone else I would be shocked, but this is Lady Gaga. What else can you expect? Her outfits and her entire persona is there for shock value, so at least she is staying true to herself and making sure each and every item she wears gets the attention she is seeking. Oh yea, her shoes look like horse’s hooves… I’m just saying.

This is not the first time Victoria Beckham has tempted me with her gorgeous Hermes Crocodile Birkin. In fact, this seems to be one of Victoria’s favorite Hermes bags from her collection (rumored to be in the hundreds of bags).

Let’s talk about why this bag works. First off, it is a timeless classic, the Hermes Birkin. Not everyone loves this bag or understands the cult-like status it has garnered, but it is hard to find this particular version anything short of fabulous. Hermes uses premium exotic skins, and their crocodile skins provide an additional level of beauty. The color is what has me in love with this bag the most. You see, it is the most stunning hue of red. A shade that is not shockingly in your face but not dull or bland. Without being overly cliche, the color is perfect. Because of its deep saturation, it can work for nearly every outfit imaginable. And what I love to see is Victoria wearing a top and jeans from her collection with this gorgeous handbag.

Because of everything listed above, Victoria Beckham is carrying my bag for this week’s Want it Wednesday.

During NYC Fashion Week Tommy Ton, of Jak and Jill Blog, snapped photos for Style.com. His focus was on street style and what was being worn outside of the tents. There was one photo that caught my eye. A bedazzled Hermes Birkin.

The first thought that came to mind is ‘Why would anyone glue gems onto their Birkin?’. The immediate next thought that followed after looking at the bag was ‘This doesn’t appear to be an authentic Hermes bag‘. Both of these thoughts left me wondering, for the sake of catching attention, would you take the time to buy a counterfeit handbag and update it to stand out?

As you all know, on both PurseBlog and PurseForum we do not advocate fake items. Does it then change if you buy a bag off Canal Street in order to have fun with it, or is it still something you would never do? And could you ever imagine buying an authentic Birkin for near $10,000 and pasting jewels on it?

There truly is something magical about New York City. Whether it is the constant commotion, the noises, the history, or the people, New York City remains an epicenter of the world. Our trip to NYC in October was for business. Lucky for me, our business revolves around shopping, and that we did.

After not lucking out with a Balenciaga bag, we took a trip to the Hermes store. I must preface this because a couple of months previous to our trip I had a dream about a black Birkin. In my dream I owned a 35 cm Black Birkin and it was perfection and I spent every mili-second of that dream telling everyone how perfect the bag is to me. Fast forward to our NYC trip and my dream came true. We left the Hermes store with a 35cm Black Clemence Birkin, a personal holy grail.

    

Like with most expensive designer brands, prospective Hermes shoppers want to know whether the money for their products is well spent. For me, the answer is a definite yes.

We decided to splurge this time and stay at one of the most recognizable hotels worldwide. The Plaza Hotel, located in the heart of Manhattan on the corner of 5th Avenue and 59th Street, ranges among the most famous hotels in the world. After being closed for renovation, the Plaza Hotel re-opened with a star studded bash and a newly designed and refined interior. All this new luxury comes at a high cost. As with Hermes, is it worth the price? We like to believe that it is.

Celebrating this opportunity, I took my Hermes collection to NYC, sans my precious Kelly Longue which was greatly missed. Not only did The Plaza offer fantastic accommodations after a long day scouring bag designer showrooms, but also the perfect canvas for photos of my Hermes babies. Venturing throughout the hotel, we quickly discovered the many special touches that were incorporated during the redesign process. From the doorknobs to the hallways, to the elevators, the hotel offered plenty of Shutterbag opportunities.

     

We spent an hour each day exploring the hotel and tried to take in every aspect of it. The first time I knew I wanted needed to stay at the Plaza Hotel was after watching Home Alone 2 many years ago. If you happened to visit during the same week we were, I am sure you saw us walking around with my three Hermes bags, posing in hallways, snapping in the bar, by the pictures, on the chairs. In the end, we created one of my favorite photos ever, A Family Portrait.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt tend to drive most of us crazy. There are the fans, but many people love to hate this duo. Who is laughing all the way to the bank? Speidi. And after they put their money in the bank, Heidi Montag purchases the most absurd amount of designer handbags. Her bags are expensive, trendy, exotic, and the collection does not stop growing. Promoting themselves, Heidi’s Playboy cover, and whatever else, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were spotted at LAX today.

No matter how amazing her collection of handbags appears, Heidi has the capability of making amazing bags look ridiculous. Take her oversized Hermes Birkin that she was spotted carrying today for example. I have always yearned for a Hermes travel Birkin, but after I see it on Heidi I cringe a bit.

Hermes, a brand known for understated elegance, must be nauseous after seeing these photos. Certainly, Spencer holding up the Playboy magazine with Heidi on the cover, as they pose to kiss does not help the overall look. Many others sport large Hermes travel bags, like Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham, they just wear it with much more class. I will continue to love this bag, but wish someone would nab it from Heidi and wear it with some grace.
