Winner: Balenciaga Gaint City in Anthracite

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Ok I think I might have found it. It is almost plausible that my hunt for the perfect Balenciaga bag may be over. You all might be getting sick of me talking about my quest for my first Balenciaga bag, but truly, with so many options and such a focus on different colors for each season, how can someone make a choice? I kept asking myself do I go for a bold bright color or do I go classic? Do I go giant hardware or regular? Do I go for an old season bag or new?

I have read countless threads on the PurseForum about Balenciaga bags. In fact, at one time I had done so much research that I clearly over-researched. Some of the older seasons are said to have better leathers. And some of the older seasons have colors that are highly coveted. Actually the more I write this post the more I find myself falling off track and starting my entire quest again. So let me wrap this up so I can finally move on!

I am thinking to opt for the Balenciaga Gaint City in Anthracite, a perfect option for a first Balenciaga bag. Anthracite is a pewter metallic color, which done properly offers a slight hint of metallic without being overly flashy. As with other Balenciaga bags, the giant City is made with soft vintage crafted lambskin and palladium plated metal hardware.

I decided on the color Anthracite for a few reasons. As much as I love a bright pink bag, Sorbet, I decided to opt for an easy to wear color. Raisin, a deep purple, was high on my list too, but I actually own a plethora of purple handbags. Then brown, chestnut, came to mind, but I have never been super fond of brown bags. Black obviously is classic, but too safe. That is how I ended up with Anthracite, a color that brings us a little bit of sheen and shine while still being everyday ready. This is the bag I would buy today, but after a couple recent purchases I am struggling pressing the checkout button. Either way, I think I have found my winner. And once I get my Balenciaga bag, I am sure I will have at least 5 more reasons why everyone should own a Balenciaga bag. Buy through Balenciaga online for $1,695.

Hunting for the perfect Balenciaga bag

Balenciaga Bags

I have long been telling the story of my collection being Balenciaga-less. It is still Balenciaga-less, even though Vlad and I were on a mission to find me the perfect first Balenciaga bag when we were in NYC. What went wrong you ask, I’ll tell you below.

We started off at the Balenciaga NY store, which is truly off the beaten path near the Hudson River on 22nd Street. The store itself was confusing. As we walked through a cave-like entry way with boisterous music echoing loudly, we wondered if we ended up in the actual store or Balenciaga corporate headquarters. It was their store indeed, with fewer handbags than I expected and service lower than sub-par. Even if there were more BBags in the back room, no one asked us if we needed help, so we only saw what was on the floor. The bag selection was bleak and the service embarrassing, so we left still Balenciaga-less.

The next stop to try to find a Balenciaga bag was Barneys NY, which was right around the corner from our hotel. The service was impeccable. I was not certain of what color I was looking for, but both sale associates that helped Vlad and I went above and beyond. In fact, one SA filled both of her arms from shoulder to wrist with all of the Balenciaga City bags they had in the store. To my disappointment, none of them were a combination of color and hardware that I was looking for.

We left Barneys NY without a Balenciaga bag but with the pleasure of having received great service. Eventually I ended up with a different handbag on our NYC trip, a black Birkin. Yet I will still so disappointed not to find a Balenciaga bag. Don’t get me wrong, a new Birkin is out-of-this-world-amazing, but I had my mind set on a BBag.

Dear PurseBlog reader, I need your help. For all of you that know your Balenciaga colors and styles, help me finally find my first B-Bag. What I am looking for: Balenciaga City, smooshy leather, giant hardware, very wearable color (an everyday and every season color).

Help me out!

Balenciaga Metallic Crocodile Wristlet

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

balenciaga-metallic-crocodile-wristletWhether or not you believe that clothing and accessories can qualify as art, you have to look at the Balenciaga Metallic Crocodile Wristlet and see, first and foremost, an art object. It’s uses (and, most likely, it’s production) are decidedly limited, but if I was to get my hands on it, I think I’d probably just hold it and stare at it anyway. The crocodile skin is treated in such a way that it almost reminds me of mother of pearl - it’s shiny, but in a way that does a beautiful job picking up the colors and the light around them, making the bag look eternally different. It’s finished with polished blue-green accents, which might be either polished stone or lucite, it’s impossible to tell, and a bold box-chain wrist strap. It doesn’t look like it would hold much, and I’m sure it costs an arm and a leg, but it’s just so stinkin’ beautiful that I don’t really care. Where do I sign up?

Fashion Week 2009: Balenciaga

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Balenciaga Fall 2009And now, for something completely different…Balenciaga Fall 2009 is certainly a big departure from the ultra-structured, futuristic, at times minimalist collections we’ve seen from Nicolas Ghesquière over the past couple of years. There’s nothing space-aged about these strongly Parisian clothes, and that only serves to prove what a versatile designer Ghesquière is and will continue to become. Anyone that can do suits so structured that just looking at them improves my posture and silk dresses so languid and airy that I want to laze around all day in them is worth whatever amount of money the Balenciaga’s parent company is paying him. A one-trick pony, he is obviously not.

This collection makes me want to move to Paris, find a tiny apartment on the Left Bank, and pretend that I’m as cool as the people that design and wear this stuff. I’m obviously not, and I don’t speak a lick of French, but a girl can dream and that’s exactly what these clothes make me do. There’s an outfit for every Parisian occasion here - sparkly fitted tops with beautifully draped silk skirts and pants, pretty suits with wrapped waists, velvet coat dresses with liquid silk sashes, and airily draped printed dresses of lightweight sheer fabric. There’s the occasional pair of regular pants, but there are too many beautiful things presented to think much about something so banal as a pair of menswear trousers. The collection also reminds me of the 1940s, but in a completely different way than the Prada war collection did - these are the clothes of movie stars that made escapist films about romance and frivolity, not hard-hitting World War II epics.

Balenciaga Lune Tote

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Balenciaga Lune ToteI think that one of my favorite things about Bluefly is that their selection is so vast and random. They carry brands that are rarely found elsewhere on the Internet and bags that may not have made it onto the radar of the casual aficionado, in addition to lots of reliable favorites. A perfect example of the breadth of their available bags is the Balenciaga Lune Tote. As one of their rarely-noticed non-motorcycle bags, the Lune may have been overlooked by many, but I think that anyone who appreciates a statement bag should give it some serious consideration. It’s a bicolor, multi-textured beauty made of soft denim-colored goat leather and smooth, slick black calfskin with enough buckles, straps, and trim to keep anyone entertained. It’s big enough to handle all of its accoutrement, though, and the Balenciaga bag designers stopped just before it got overdone. The more I look at it, the more I wonder why we never saw Victoria Beckham carrying the Lune - it kind of looks like something she would like, doesn’t it? Buy through Bluefly for $2060.

Balenciaga Arena Giant Envelope

My love of Balenciaga continues to grow and I often find myself wondering why is it that I literally do not own one Balenciaga bag? I know, it is some sort of travesty that I do not own a Balenciaga bag. My collection is vast and covers many designers, but for an amount of time […]
